AQUARIUN Hall in Regional Natural History Museum - Plovdiv

   Bulgaria’s biggest freshwater aquarium was opened in 1974 as part of the permanent exposition of the Natural History Museum in Plovdiv. The new facility is set up in an area of 100 m2. It consists of 48 beautifully arranged aquariums with 32 exotic fish species and indigenous species from the Maritsa river basin.
   Today, the exposition has been further replenished and diversified with specimens from various regions:
   North and South America – the Amazon and Rio Negro river basins, Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia (Amphilophus citrinellus – Red devil,

   The aquarium exposition contains lots of water plants from the following regions: Dwarf anubias (Africa) ,
Bacopa caroliniana - Lemon bacopa,
Vallisneria americana – Wild celery (North America),
Cabomba aquatica - Yellow cabomba, Cabomba piauhyensis – Red cabomba,
Echinodorus angustifolius – Echinodorus (North and South America),
Cryptocoryne usteriana – Cryptocoryne (the Philipines),
Cryptocoryne undulata – Undulate cryptocoryne, Beckett’s cryptocoryne – Undulate cryptocoryne (Sri Lanka),
Cryptocorine cordate – Giant cryptocoryne (Malaka Peninsula),
Vallisneria gigantea - Giant vallisneria – (Southeast Asian islands),
Vallisneria spiralis f.tortifolia - Straight vallisneria (Vietnam and Japan).
   Newts, frogs, crustaceous and reptiles such as Green turtle, Red-eared slider, and European pond terrapin are also included in the collection.
